He was not quite seventeen years old when he met a beautiful young girl of the high hills of the Ozarks, that later on were called the Ozark Mountains. She was the only daughter in a family of seven boys belonging to an old fashioned family, that had kin folks scattered all over the hills. these folks were very strict with the daughters of the families. They were a clannishtype of people that looked out for each other, and if one got crosswise with one of the clan he was crosswise with all of them. There was an old saying that verified this. To git aholt of one of them wasnt hard to do, hit was turning all of them loose was the hard part. She was just fifteen years old when her and Clay met. She was a daughter of one of the Hyatts and her name was Melissa Ann, but she called Missy Ann or just Missy. When Clay and Missy met and fell in love, they broke on of the oldest rules of the clans, and that was that a young couple were not allowed to spend time together without being chaperoned. The two youngsters knew better, but Missy was afraid to let her family find out that she and Clay had spent most of the first day they met alone together. Missy was lonely because there were not any other young girls close enough to really visit, and Clay was interesting to a lonely girl. They later seen together alone and word got around. And Clay knew that he very easily could have caused a feud to start between the Hyatts and his family the Dells, and might have included another family by the name of Smalls. Because Amy Small the daughter of the Smalls and Clay had grew up in the area and were friends, and Amys mother had hopes of them to marry when they were older, and she had decided that they were more or less betrothed to each other. And for Clay to take up with another girl, was a terrible insult to the Smalls. And Clay decided to leave the country before the feud started, and maybe could come back someday and make amends after things had quieted down and then he and Missy could start over. He to the range lands in the west and made a name for himself as a part time lawman and bounty hunter, before he returned to the Ozark Mountains and home. This is his story.
